MISTER SMITH’S

THE HISTORY

“The best bread in the world”. . .

Amy Bloom - Oprah Magazine, September, 2002

and now the best food!

Larry Smith started baking back when he was a police captain in Connecticut. He brought a salted peasant loaf home to go with dinner and everyone loved it. That was the night Larry decided to learn how to bake.

After Larry was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease he retired from Police Captain and focused on baking. He and his wife moved to South Dakota to start a new chapter of their lives and Larry started baking for a little coffee shop in downtown Vermillion. Everyone loved Larry’s sticky buns, and it didn’t stop there. Larry was a loving man with a passion for making people happy and expressed it through his baking. Larry became known by everyone in town and was next offered an opportunity to bake bread for a sandwich shop which would be called “Mister Smiths” in honor of Larry and his extraordinary talent.

The breads used today are still Larry’s recipes, and most importantly made with the same kind of love Larry put into them!
